Case Study: Designing a Backyard Built for Escapes, Day or Night

Over the past 25 years, we’ve watched backyards on Long Island evolve far beyond a single patio or television. Today, many homeowners are creating outdoor spaces that function more like an extension of the home itself, with areas for watching sports, gaming with the kids, listening to music, cooking outdoors, relaxing by the firepit, and hosting friends and family throughout the season.
For this project in Woodbury, Long Island, NY, the goal was to create multiple outdoor entertainment areas without letting the technology take over the backyard. The property included a pool pavilion, outdoor kitchen, firepit seating area, and landscape audio spread across the yard. Each area presented different lighting conditions, listening distances, and environmental challenges that had to be planned for before installation began.
With more than two decades of experience designing outdoor entertainment systems across Long Island, Smarter Home Solutions approached the project with a strong focus on long-term reliability and real everyday use with simple control. The system combined Samsung Terrace outdoor televisions, Sonos audio distribution, Sonance landscape speakers, Ambisonic outdoor audio, and buried infrastructure planned around the size of the property, the pool environment, and north shore weather conditions.
Multiple Outdoor Spaces With Different Requirements
This Nassau County upscale property included several outdoor entertainment areas designed for different types of use. The pool pavilion centered around television viewing and sports, while the kitchen, firepit, and surrounding landscape areas were designed more around conversation and distributed audio.
Each area presented different environmental conditions. The pavilion television needed to remain visible during full daytime sun, while the landscape audio system needed to provide even coverage across open outdoor spaces without creating harsh volume in different seating areas. At the same time, the technology needed to stay visually discreet throughout the property.

A Full-Sun Outdoor TV Designed for Everyday Use
Many backyard televisions work well at night, but the real test is mid-day when direct sunlight reaches the screen. For this project, we installed a Samsung Terrace full-sun television with concealed wiring routed through the brick wall and Apple TV integration for streaming services. The goal was comfortable viewing from multiple seating areas without glare becoming a distraction.
The installation also needed to account for weather, pool conditions, and routine landscaping around the pavilion. Wiring paths were carefully planned through the brick and framing to keep cabling and equipment out of sight without disrupting the overall look of the space.
Landscape Audio Around the Kitchen and Firepit
With multiple seating areas across the backyard, the goal was to create even audio coverage whether the homeowners were cooking near the outdoor kitchen, relaxing by the firepit, or spending time around the pool.
The system combined Sonance landscape audio, Ambisonic outdoor speakers, and in-ground subwoofers placed carefully throughout the property. Each speaker was selected for both performance and appearance so it could blend naturally into the landscaping and surrounding architecture. Instead of creating one loud listening area, the system was designed to distribute sound more evenly across the backyard.
The result was balanced audio that remained clear near conversation areas without forcing certain sections of the property to become excessively loud, which is a common problem with many indoor and outdoor speaker systems.

Infrastructure Designed for Long-Term Reliability
A backyard system like this only works when the wiring and equipment are planned well in advance. For this project, we specified direct burial speaker wire, Cat6 cabling, PVC conduit pathways, and long-distance signal distribution to connect the pavilion, kitchen, firepit, and landscape audio areas without exposed wiring across the backyard. Direct-burial cabling and conduit are common best practices for outdoor low-voltage systems because they protect wire runs from moisture, soil movement, landscaping work, and long-term wear.
The Cat6 infrastructure also supported streaming, communication between devices, and consistent WiFi coverage across the different outdoor entertainment areas.
The pavilion also required careful work through brick so the Samsung Terrace weatherproof display could be mounted cleanly without visible cable clutter. That meant planning the wire path, protecting the wall opening, securing the mount properly, and keeping the finished look appropriate for a luxury backyard.
Most of the equipment was kept away from the exterior living areas and organized in a rack for protection, service access, and cleaner installation. That behind-the-scenes planning allowed the homeowners to enjoy multiple televisions, streaming sources, and balanced sound coverage without making the backyard look like a tech showroom. The finished space looks simple because the complicated work was handled before anyone pressed play.
A Backyard Designed to Be Used More Often
During the day, the pavilion television remains easy to watch even in direct sunlight while music plays evenly between the pool, kitchen, and firepit without overpowering conversation. As the evening settles in, the homeowners can easily shift from sports and daytime activity to lower-volume music around the firepit and outdoor kitchen.
Although the system supports multiple entertainment areas, most of the technology stays hidden from view. The televisions, speakers, wiring, and equipment were integrated carefully into the property so the backyard still feels like a backyard instead of an oversized entertainment installation.

Outdoor Entertainment Systems for Long Island Homes
Outdoor entertainment projects work best when the technology supports the property instead of competing with it. Every backyard has different lighting conditions, listening areas, viewing angles, and environmental challenges that affect how the system should be installed.
For this Woodbury, NY project, the goal was to create several gathering areas that could support sports, music, streaming, and everyday use throughout the season. From the full-sun pavilion television to the landscape audio surrounding the pool and firepit, the system was built around how the homeowners actually spend time outside.
Smarter Home Solutions has been designing and installing outdoor entertainment systems across Long Island for more than 25 years, helping homeowners create spaces that feel just as comfortable and functional as the rest of the home.
